While it was hailing early this evening, we stood out on the deck exclaiming over it. It was pretty heavy for a while. I had fun blasting the flash out into the sky, not even looking through the viewfinder. One of the neighbors in the building next door came out to see what was up.

I like the fact that the flash makes the hail look like it's going up. That's because the flash shot as the shutter opened, and then there's a fraction of a second while the shutter is still open and gathering light. Enough to get the effect you see here. Hah! (In fact, some people shoot their flash only before the shutter closes -- "rear curtain" flash it's called.)
